Brighton tops out Big Cottonwood Canyon at the SR-190 loop, about 8,730 feet, and the drive is the gentler of the two Cottonwood climbs: fourteen miles, moderate grades, and fewer avalanche paths than next door. Gentler is relative. SR-190 is a Class 3 traction segment with mouth enforcement, and Brighton's night skiing means the descent traffic runs headlong into evening uphill traffic all winter.
Brighton's storm day risk is less often closure and more often surge: when Little Cottonwood closes, this canyon absorbs its crowd at canyon road capacity, and the last three miles to the loop carry nearly all of it. The Big Cottonwood verdict and the comparison page are the two reads that matter on those mornings.
In summer the loop is also the Guardsman Pass trailhead for cars: over the ridge to Park City on a seasonal shelf road that is a snowbank all winter. Any route that sends you over the top between the first snow and the spring opening is wrong, and our corridor page will say so in the events list when UDOT posts the gate.
